Event date: October 15, 2024
Event Time: 06:30 PM – 07:30 PM
Description:
While Cuba itself is a small island, the impact that its music has had throughout the world is quite large. This talk will cover types of ensembles such as big band, timba, and boogaloo, and representative artists such as Buena Vista Social Club and Tito Puente, to name a few. Instrumentation of salsa, rumba, and others will be covered, as well as the development of salsa in New York City. Most importantly, we will be listening to plenty of music!

Charley Gerard is a composer of chamber music and symphonic works in addition to being a jazz composer, saxophonist, and the director of the Broken Reed Saxophone Quartet. His works have been performed by One World Symphony, Harlem String Quartet, Eight Strings and a Whistle, Washington Square Winds, the Irrelevants, and Washington Musica Viva. Mr. Gerard is an author and editor of several books on jazz and Latin American music.
